A couple weeks ago, Huffington Post Weddings featured an article I wrote about wedding day beauty. I hope it proved to be an educational read for brides-to-be and their wedding parties.

The article shares advice from two of my highly recommended Bay Area wedding stylists, Jim Avila and Darlene Carlson. I had an enjoyable time interviewing them for the story, and wanted to share their full Q + A for even more tips on how to achieve a peaceful, beautiful wedding day.

What do you think makes a beautiful bride?

DC: Inner peace and calm reflects your true beauty,and gives you the chance to enjoy the love and happiness of your wedding day.

What is the best thing a bride can do beauty-wise to prepare for the wedding day?

DC: Arrange to have your hair and makeup done professionally on site. You won’t have to fight traffic and possible delays going to a salon. Instead spend your

time enjoying family and friends. You will have a fun and relaxing start to your wedding day.

On a wedding day, what are some of your secrets for a successful flow to getting ready?

JA: Work with a wedding planner or designer whom you know and trust. Do your homework before hiring them, then let them make decisions on the day so all you have to do is be calm and beautiful.

Have a trial with your hair and makeup artist before the big day, you don't want any surprises. Eat and drink your favorite things, but not too much. Brides tend not to eat and that can lead to you passing out.

What are your tips for jewelry on the wedding day for the bride and bridal party?

JA: Don't wear too much! I don't recommending wearing a headpiece, necklace AND earrings - two pieces are good, three is too much. If you have on too much bling, people look at that and not you. Your engagement and wedding rings are the most important pieces you will wear that day.

If you have family heirloom pieces, sometimes they work well with the bride's look and sometimes they do not. If it's important to your family that you wear them, consider wearing them only down the aisle or perhaps only at the reception, but not all day.

For bridesmaids, my advice is don't give each one the same thing. They are individuals, so it's nice to give each of these special people in your life something special too.

What are common mistakes brides make with regards to wedding day hair and makeup?

JA: Too much, too big, too overdone. You should look like you did the best job ever on yourself. You do not want to look like you were beat up at a make-up counter and tortured at the hair salon. Think about how he likes to see you.

My goal is to make each bride look elegant, chic, sophisticated and a little sexy. Remember this -- women get married, girls don't.

DC: Don’t date your wedding day by picking a trendy style for your hair or makeup. You don’t want to shudder when you see photographs years later.

Any other advice for brides?

JA: In the weeks leading up to the wedding, wear sunscreen on all parts of your body. exposed to the sun. The last things you want are tan lines and sunburns in your photos. If your groom is going to play sports to relieve stress, make sure he wears sunscreen too.

And speaking of grooms, don't let them groom get a haircut on the wedding day. In the week before, yes. But the day of, NO.

Holiday shopping can seem a little stressful and daunting for some, especially if it evokes images of crowded malls and busy parking lots. I wanted to share my recommendations for a perfectly delightful day of gift-buying, one that will leave you with a smile on your face and charming little trinkets to present to your family and friends.

For fun and unique items discovered off-the-beaten path, I highly recommend heading to one of my favorite little Bay Area towns, Mill Valley. The downtown area is filled with wonderful small businesses, and I always love supporting local purveyors this time of year. Street parking is easy (and it's free for the holiday season!). Take in the fresh air and enjoy the holiday decorations as you stroll the streets and peruse the quant shops in the area. Here are some of my must-stops:

Opening this week, Moss and Daughters looks to be the perfect stop for a hostess gift this holiday season. The shop carries an assortment of house plants, orchids, wreaths, as well as charming antiques.

This little antique shop has wonderful gifts, statement pieces, books, and home & garden items...and on Friday nights proprietor Larry Moss treats shoppers to wine and live piano music on the shop's baby grand.

One of the best kitchen stores out there, this shop goes way beyond the typical. For food lovers in your life, a stop here is a MUST. They have some of the most beautiful and creative gift baskets I've ever seen - throw in some of Tyler's own products like cookbooks, cutlery, tasty sauces and spice rubs.

Lovely home and garden shop with French roots, the owner Yasmine fills the shop with treasures and fun things for gifts of all ages.

Once you've collected all your treasures, pop into the bar at El Paseo for a bottle of champagne and the restaurant's new caviar service...after all, you deserve a little treat yourself.

Weekly Inspiration: Fall Flowers

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I wanted to share how to capture the essence of fall without using the ubiquitous color palette of red, orange and brown. My long-time colleague Kathleen Deery created these beautiful autumn-inspired flower arrangements for a recent event of mine. Instead of going the traditional route, Kathleen choose pale pink flowers mixed with yellowy green and crimson leaves, and little touches of acorns here and there. Perfectly autumnal, but a fresh and innovative approach.

Sita + Colburn's Halloween Engagement Party

This fall, I had the unique pleasure of planning an engagement party for one of my wedding couples, Sita and Colburn. On Halloween weekend, we turned the bride's family home into a haunted house, complete with cobwebs, misty fog and ghostly creatures lurking in the corners. In fact, my staff and I got into the 'spirit' of the holiday by dressing as zombie maids and a butler to great guests as they arrived at the party.

Daniel Ripley Catering put together an amazing menu of passed hors d'oeuvres, small bites and desserts, including be-deviled eggs, witch hat grilled cheeses and broken finger cookies. This show-stopping engagement cake is by Perfect Endings. Inspired by PS Paper's custom invitations, the three-tiered red velvet cake was a huge hit with guests and a marvelous surprise for the bride and groom at the end of the night.

We've been having a lot of fun at recent events with Smilebooth, a state of the art photo booth camera with lots of custom backdrops to choose from. Guests had so much fun posing in their costumes...just look at some of these fun pictures from the night (including the LASE team, trying our best to look spooky for the camera).

Laurie + Barry: A Look Back at My Wedding Day

This past weekend, my husband and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary (we've been celebrating all month actually, but this weekend marked the official anniversary). The beautiful weekend of weather we just had is the exact same weather we had five years ago. A perfect October day in the Napa Valley. I couldn't have asked for anything better.

We had such an amazing weekend surrounded by lots of family and friends. My husband Barry and I decided to have a big wedding to include all the special people from different parts of our lives. We just couldn't imagine not having them all with us to celebrate. It was especially fun for me to share my work life with my family and friends, many of whom had only seen pictures of my weddings but never experienced one in person.

Our venue was a beautiful estate called Oak Knoll Ranch, modeled after a famous New Orleans manor. It is so pretty in pale pink, with white wrap-around porches and old wisteria vines. I designed the style of the wedding after the surroundings - we built upon the southern feel and the color palette to create an elegant yet relaxed affair with pale pink throughout.

The whole day was a bit surreal, but being the bride and not the planner was an easier transition than I thought. In fact, everyone kept remarking how calm I was - I owe that to my amazing staff, who took care of every detail so I could enjoy the day.

It was so special to me to have an incredible team of vendors, people I have known and worked with for years, help make the wedding so beautiful, so simple and so me. Additionally, Barry and I both treasure our parents dearly, and that we both got to walk into our wedding ceremony on their arms is a priceless moment we'll cherish all our lives. And I must mention another special guest of honor, Roscoe. Roscoe was my dog before Barry and I met, but Barry fell quickly in love with the little guy and insisted he be part of our big day too.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the incredible vendors who made the day so special:

We are looking for a hard-working, detail-oriented, outgoing, wedding-loving intern to join the Boutique Events division.

JOB DUTIES

· Assist with day-to-day office tasks to include vendor contact and filing.
· Assist with management of guest hotel room blocks.

·     Assist with meeting coordination.
·     Maintain office calendar and database.
·     Assist with execution of events as needed.
·     Assist with various projects as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS
· Mac savvy and proficient in the Microsoft Office suite.
· Ability to multi-task and work autonomously.
· Excellent communication and organizational skills.
· College degree or enrolled college student.
· Corporate experience a plus.

This position is part-time (approximately 4-8 hours per week + select weekends). Hours and schedule are flexible. Interns must be able to work from the Boutique Events office in the Peninsula and have a car.

Engagement Shoots: Jose Villa

The last couple weeks have been all about inspiration for me. I've been traveling in Europe, reveling in the beauty of Paris, Portofino, Florence and Rome. After a very busy fall event season, it's just what I needed to replenish my energy, both physically and creatively. From the food, to the scenery, to the service, I've found so many wonderful sources of inspiration for next year's weddings and events.

One place I continuously find inspiration is in the work of Jose Villa - wedding photographer extraordinaire. His work is filled with so much ethereal beauty, it's heavenly. Jose recently shot two of our wedding couples for next year in their engagement sessions. An engagement shoot is not only a wonderful opportunity to bond with your photographer, but when you work with someone as talented as Jose, it leaves you with photos you will treasure throughout your married life.

Love This: Bloody Mary Brunches

I apologize that I've been a little sleepy on the blog posts...it's because I myself have been a little sleepy from a very busy summer season. My last few weddings have been so much fun, with guests dancing into the late night hours.
The perfect remedy for a late night wedding is a Bloody Mary Brunch for guests the next day. I just love these prawn-topped cocktails at a recent brunch, adding an upscale twist to the classic Bloody Mary.

One of my favorite aspects of wedding planning is taking things the bride and groom love and making them into special experiences for their guests. At the after-party for Sarah and Joseph's San Francisco wedding, we created a decadent display of Cocoa Bella truffles from around the world for guests to enjoy while dancing. A sommelier even paired port and dessert wines with the delectable little bites.

This abundant and beautiful table is {almost} as sweet to look at as it is to devour.

Roscoe & Jack's Summer Birthday Party

This July, my husband and I were excited to celebrate the birthdays of our adorable westies ~ ten year old Roscoe and three year old Jack. I love a great party almost as much as I love my little guys, so we invited our friends with dogs to come celebrate the occasion in summer style.

Cocktails of limeade and Ketel One Citreon were passed for the grown ups, with bottles of Crush soda with striped straws for the kids. We served a seasonal lunch of lobster rolls, corn salad and beef tenderloin sandwiches.

When I started planning the party, I knew right away I wanted to serve the incredible ice cream sandwiches of Jackson's Ice-Cycle. In fact, Jackson's bicycle inspired the entire color palette for the event. The ice cream sandwiches, made with Three Twins ice cream and cookies by Miette, were a huge hit with our guests, but I didn't want to leave the dogs out of the fun. So I talked to Jackson about making special doggie sandwiches, with homemade dog biscuits and Frosty Paws doggie ice cream. But they weren't done with their treats yet...an adorable birthday cake by George was presented to Roscoe & Jack, while each puppy enjoyed his very own birthday cake-shaped dog cookie.

The best part of the day was watching Jack, Roscoe and all their puppy friends play together. Jack's litter mate Maddie, our office mascot Bunsen and the first dog of California Sutter were just some of the party guests...they seemed to have a ball. Each dog took home a personalized placemat (by the ever crafty Jill Sassa of PS Paper) with their owners enjoying custom Jack and Roscoe cookies by Barbara at Felix the Cook.

Disco Ball Dance Party: 40th Birthday

While weddings are our first love at LASE, it's so much fun to plan other events that let us get creative in a totally different way. One of my favorite former clients wanted to celebrate her 40th birthday with a spectacular dance party and I was thrilled to help her birthday wish come true.

We chose for the venue the new Oshman Family Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto and promptly began to transform it into a stylish nightclub lounge. The evening began with cocktails on the balcony patio, designed as a cool urban rooftop deck. Three specialty cocktails {Kir Royales, Cosmopolitans and Chocolate Martinis ~the guest of honor's favorite, but more on that later} were passed as guests relaxed on outdoor lounge furniture under beautifully lit trees brought in for the occasion.

We then revealed the dance lounge, draped in lavender with white, grey and hot fuchsia accents. Swanky lounge furniture and high bar tables gave the space a club-like feel. The stainless steel dance floor reflected the warm pink mood lighting and spinning mirror ball. We carried the disco ball design throughout the party, on the invitations, cocktail menus and the unbelievable birthday cake.

DJ Solomon played the birthday girl's favorite dance music, a little 80's mixed in with today's hot artists, and the dance floor stayed packed. Guests broke from dancing to enjoy the dessert buffet I designed with Paula LeDuc and PS Paper. She loves chocolate, so the buffet overflowed with trifles, truffles and pot de cremes.

There's so much I love about this party, but I was truly impressed with the disco ball birthday cake. It was a perfect replica of the adorable invitation we created for the party and was an absolute show stopper.

Weekly Inspiration: Seasonal Cocktails

No matter the time of year, I love taking advantage seasonal fresh fruit when serving signature cocktails at my clients' weddings. These refreshing Rossini's combine champagne with strawberry puree for a perfect summer sip at a sunny July wedding.

Let the season of your wedding inspire some creative mixology - pumpkin and ginger make marvelous martinis in fall, cranberries warm any chilly day in winter, and citrus and mint in the spring are fresh and bright like the season itself.

Meadowood Croquet Lunch: Joanne + Daniel

Joanne and Daniel planned a weekend of events in the Napa Valley for their friends and family from all over the U.S. and U.K. (you may remember their Black Swan Lake wedding). The three days of fun culminated with a sunny Sunday lunch on the croquet lawn at Meadowood resort.

Guests sipped Schramsberg sparkling wine poured by Meadowood's master sommelier and enjoyed a lunch of gourmet sandwiches and fresh summer salads. Following lunch, the resort's croquet pro took guests {dressed entirely in white and khaki as the rules of croquet require} onto the lawn to start some friendly games.

Joanne and Daniel then treated everyone to an ice cream sundae bar and carrot cake from Perfect Endings - a sweet conclusion to the weekend.

Happy 4th of July + Special Birthday Wishes

Happy Independence Day everyone. I hope you're all out enjoying the holiday in proper patriotic style.

I have another reason to celebrate today ~ it's the birthday of my westie Roscoe. I wanted to share a few pictures from a fun Fourth of July BBQ birthday party I threw for Roscoe when he turned 1. I just love the custom westie cookies each of Roscoe's party guests took home.

It's another milestone birthday for Roscoe today (10 years!). So naturally, I'm in the process of planning a little puppy party for him and my other westie Jack who turns 3 on the 8th. They're both very excited to celebrate with their doggie buddies and I'm excited for some surprises I have in the works for their guests.

Opulent Indian Wedding: Priyanka + Chaitanya

Priyanka and Chaitanya are a young and modern couple to whom family and tradition are very important. This stunning bride and her handsome groom dreamed of a colorful, elaborate affair surrounded by their loved ones ~ with all the ornate details that make Indian weddings so special and fun. We enlisted design genius Stanlee Gatti to create a spectacular setting for this 600-person event.

Wedding day festivities began with the Baraat - the traditional procession where the groom arrives at the wedding accompanied by music, dancing and celebrating by his family members. A white horse carried Chaitanya to the venue doors, where Priyanka's family greeted the procession with flower garlands. The bride walked down a lush and dramatic petal aisle to the ceremonial mandap, covered in thousands of flowers.

Guests then moved to a poolside cocktail reception, sipping refreshing Caipiroskas {a cocktail of lime, vodka, soda and mint} and nibbling traditional Indian fare and sweets passed by the bride and groom's mothers.

Jewel-like tones of rich purple, royal blue and vibrant green filled the ballroom for dinner, where guests enjoyed a sumptuous meal catered by Amber India. Chaitanya and Priyanka, dressed in a couture gold ballgown for the reception, were toasted with good wishes as they sat in a custom swing. The celebrations continued into the late-night hours, with dancing to Indian and American music woven together by DJ Salim.

Love This: TOMS Shoes

Thanks to everyone for the kind words following the lovely Style Me Pretty feature on Dabney + Rob's wedding! I'm so glad you all loved seeing it as much as I loved planning it.

I couldn't wait to share this fun follow-up post today. Remember those amazing embroidered napkins, custom made by Kathleen Deery Design? The bride and groom's dear friend Blake Mycoskie, the philanthropist and entrepreneur behind TOMS shoes, decided to take a few home {with a little covert assistance from my staff} to surprise them with special TOMS shoes on their anniversary.

The sentiment was already so sweet of him...but as we all know, a lot can happen in a year. The couple recently welcome their adorable daughter into the world too!

So Blake made sure she had her very first pair of TOMS, just like her mom and dad. Take a look at this gorgeous family and tell me your heart isn't melting!

Waking up on a sunny morning to find one of my favorite weddings posted as the feature story on Style Me Pretty...can this day get any better?

Dabney + Rob are such a wonderful couple (you may remember their rehearsal dinner at Calistoga Ranch). Working with them to create this special wedding is a memory I will cherish for the rest of my career. I'm so happy the ladies at Style Me Pretty wanted to share it with the world too!

My team and I are very excited by the two wonderful features mentioning LASE in the latest issue of San Francisco Brides magazine.

Jenna Lam, director of my Boutique Events division was included in The New Guard ~ an article about talented up-and-coming wedding vendors in the Bay Area. A well-deserved honor for sure.

SF Brides also features the oh-so-charming wedding of Kathryn + Ryan in San Francisco. Their cozy December ceremony at Swedenborgian Church, followed by a vintage-inspired reception at the Presidio Social Club, was so unique yet so timeless. Kathryn, of Snippet & Ink, was such a joy to work with that we just love reliving her wedding on the pages of the magazine. Congratulations to Elizabeth Messina too, who not only shot Kathryn + Ryan's day, but the cover photograph for this issue as well.

I'm very proud that Jenna and my Boutique Events weddings are being recognized less than a year after this new division launched. Thanks to the lovely ladies and San Francisco Brides for thinking of us.

Tyler Florence's 40th Birthday Party

If you picked up this month’s C Magazine, you hopefully caught the fun feature about Chef Tyler Florence’s 40^th Birthday Party.

Tolan Florence, Tyler’s lovely and talented wife, wanted to plan something memorable for the celebrity chef’s milestone birthday in March. The two of us began brainstorming blowout party plans, but with the opening of El Paseo {Tyler’s latest restaurant with music legend Sammy Hagar} just around the corner, we decided there was no better way to celebrate than to bring the couple’s closest friends together in the new chophouse.

It was exciting for me to be part of El Paseo’s debut. It was a race to the finish but General Manager Adel Bukary, Director of Services Cory Lane and the whole El Paseo team managed to pull it off flawlessly. Last minute touches to the Mill Valley restaurant were put on just minutes before the first guests arrived!

The cocktail-style party allowed guests to mingle through the restaurant’s several dining rooms, bar and outdoor patio while sipping rosé Champagne and Floc de Gascogne. Music from Michael LaMacchia's trio strummed throughout the party, with candles and lanterns lining the restaurant’s charming brick pathway.

Tyler and chef de cuisine Preston Clark fired up the kitchen for the first time that day and treated everyone to a sneak preview of the menu to come. If you’ve had a chance to visit El Paseo since it opened, you know that means incredible food made with fresh local ingredients.

Inspired by the steakhouse’s classic rustic décor as well as Tyler’s southern roots, Jill Sassa from PS Paper and I designed a dessert buffet with petite treats from Paula LeDuc Fine Catering. Custom wooden risers displayed homey desserts like mini bourbon pecan pies, banana trifles, apple turnovers and caramel corn with Tyler's birthday cake at the center.

As the trio died down, DJ Dojah turned up the volume and El Paseo’s main dining room turned quickly into a dance floor. Dojah even put the headphones on Tyler and had him spin some tunes for the last set - something Tyler always wanted to do.

This spring I had the pleasure of planning the 40th Birthday Party of my friend and event partner Tyler Florence, at his new restaurant El Paseo in Mill Valley. C Magazine's latest issue has a great feature on the party....not to mention the photo finish getting the brand new restaurant ready for guest arrival. My favorite part of the event {besides the delectable Angry Lobster Tyler prepared} was the amazing rustic dessert buffet. The collaboration between Jill Sassa from PS Paper and Paula LeDuc Fine Catering never ceases to impress.

Weekly Inspiration: Beautiful Lounge Furniture

One of my signature event design philosophies is 'layering' ~ keeping portions of the event a surprise to guests and revealing them as the night progresses. I especially love to do this with a dance lounge after dinner. The drama of unveiling the space gets guests excited to hit the dance floor.

This beautiful lounge furniture is so chic, in the style of a fashionable supper club. While we used to have to custom-create a look like this, I'm so happy that rental furniture has come a long way in the past few years. Brides now have more to choose from - whether they want their space to feel like a cool nightclub (like Laura + Jason), a vintage parlor (like Kathryn + Ryan) or an over-the-top afterparty (like Nikki + Chad).

Tyler Florence Coit Tower Dinner Party

This spring I had the privilege of working with my partner, Chef Tyler Florence on a very special event benefitting the San Francisco Parks Trust and San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department.

Two generous attendees of the annual Party for the Parks gala bid on a private dinner prepared by Tyler at San Francisco landmark Coit Tower. These lucky donors invited 10 guests to join them for this unique experience not available to the general public.

The evening began with cocktails at sunset, atop the tower's observation deck. Guests sipped mugs of hot apple cider as they took in 360-degree views of the bay and city. Tyler prepared a selection of southern-inspired appetizers, including his incredible fried chicken from Wayfare Tavern. Following cocktails, docents led guests down to the tower’s main floor for a tour of the fascinating murals dating back to the 1930s.

The tour ended at a candle-lit table for 12 inspired by the colors of the murals and the Golden Gate Bridge. Tyler introduced each dish of his custom four-course menu and treated guests to an impressive table-side presentation of crown roast of veal.

I have had the pleasure of collaborating with Meg Smith for over 10 years. Her work is classic yet modern and she's great at capturing those special moments with her photojournalistic style.

Because Meg has been shooting beautiful weddings for years, she comes with a calm that can only be cumulated with experience. She knows how to anticipate the next moment before it happens. Additionally, Meg is an absolute pleasure to work with. She has the same dedication to her clients that I do and cares deeply about delivering more than they asked for. Clients can really trust her with the significant responsibility of capturing the day perfectly.

What do you find most exciting about your job?
I think that my clients are amazing. They are some serious "movers and shakers" doing powerful, interesting things in their fields. I feel lucky to intersect with them and then be able to photograph them on such a personal, joyful occasion.

I also love getting to work with so many creative people on weddings. In the end it is a collaboration of many elements -- none of us in the "wedding world" work in a vacuum and we all bring our talent to the table and share it. If my photos look beautiful it's also because there were many people who had a hand in helping make it beautiful; whether it's a luscious garden to photograph in, a breathtaking dress, a bountiful bouquet, or a planner who knew I needed the couple at that time, because of that light....!

Many people might not know this but I do, so I will share - you were raised in the Napa Valley so you have seen it grow and change a lot in your lifetime. What do you think are the best reasons to get married in the Napa Valley?

I was born in Davis while my father finished his Master's degree in viticulture and eonology, but we moved to the top of Spring Mountain Road, 200 acres overlooking the valley, when I was one. It was a farming town then! What hasn't changed is the beauty of the light and the gorgeous vistas. And now there are so many culinary destinations--the best the world has to offer has influenced the hotels, restaurants, and wineries here. You can do as much as you want or as little!

What professional photographer do you most admire and why?

Historically, I love Henri Cartier-Bresson because his work was about capturing moments that were fleeting, but were happening completely naturally. So much photography (especially weddings!) feels so staged to me. The challenge for me is to capture things as they naturally unfold, to capture the moments between moments that others might not notice.

Currently, John Dolan and Victoria Pearson have been really influential. They did the photography for the first couple Martha Stewart Weddings magazines, and forever changed the idea that wedding photography had to look a certain way. John is still developing film in his sink, so he gets extra points!

What are your feelings on digital photography versus film?

I don't think I would have become a photographer if I was getting started in photography now. The beauty for me was processing film, seeing grain, an image emerging in the darkroom under a red light, chemistry, tongs, long rolls of negatives drying from a cloths line. Now? A CF card, a card reader and a computer. It doesn't look the same and it certainly doesn't feel the same. It's the same reason I surround myself with books and don't own a television -- I love the texture of paper, whether in a book or from a fiber-based museum-quality photograph.

I always suggest that my clients prepare a shot list of the must-have photos for their wedding day, but not go too crazy with group portraits; otherwise your wedding reception will turn into a photo shoot. Do you agree or have any other advice like this to share?

It's important to capture family groupings, they are historically important. But yes, keep it reasonable! I agree that the wedding is not a photo shoot, but a historically important event that should be documented. It's vital to allow time and space for things to unfold naturally. That's when I think the most playful images can occur, and it simply can't happen if I'm trying to get through a three-page list of photo requests.

Are there any current trends that you find particularly inspiring at weddings right now?

I like that there's a step back from the completely over-the-top wedding. There's more interest in making it really personal. It's a reflection of the couple -- their values and their interests -- and that makes it more special to photograph and I feel more invested.

If you weren't a wedding photographer, what career would you like to have?

I love wedding photography and I hope I'll be doing it for as long as people like my work. I'm also excited about a new direction my work is taking; I've just been contracted for my first cookbook! It's so natural since I live in Napa Valley and grew up in the wine industry, and my personal interests are all about gardening, sustainability, food and cooking -- basically the "Northern California lifestyle" we are so blessed to have here.

Not only do they add a pop of color, but lemons perfectly reflect the time of year when everything feels fresh and new.

The Breakers, Palm Beach

The legendary Breakers is a spectacular Italian-Renaissance hotel overlooking the ocean in Palm Beach. Its grand old world feel is just magnificent ~ a truly special place with so much rich history that each of their beautiful ballrooms transports you to another time and place. In addition, the service is outstanding, making each guest feel like a king or queen.

City Hall, San Francisco

San Franciscans are truly lucky to have such a stunning and impressive building for our City Hall. Even a small elopement feels so significant and special when the couple steps onto the grand staircase in the Rotunda. But I love City Hall for large receptions, with dinner and dancing under the gilded dome or in the spacious North Light Court. With its marble floors and grand archways, City Hall is a wonderful venue for feeling like American royalty.

The Palace Hotel, San Francisco

The iconic Palace Hotel is a landmark in San Francisco, reminiscent of turn-of-the-century grandeur. The Garden Court, with its spectacular stained glass dome and crystal chandeliers, is perfectly befitting a royal reception. Isn't it breathtaking in candlelight? I also recommend taking a page from Prince Harry's wedding playbook by hosting an after-party in the Ralston Room, giving guests a chance to really cut loose at the end of the night.

Weekly Inspiration: Brides + Bonnets

If you love weddings as much as I do, I'm sure you're up early to catch every minute of the Royal Wedding coverage. I'm most looking forward to seeing the bride's gown, but also the colorful assortment of custom hats worn by revelers.

In honor of William and Kate, I just had to share this picture of a bride who loved unique headwear as much as our neighbors across the pond. Commissioned by a milliner in France, she donned this miniature Swedish-style crown for the ceremony. It was made specially for her to replicate the one her mother wore on her wedding day. She then had a little fun by putting on a festive fascinator of greenery for the cocktail reception.

The Royal Wedding is sure to spark trends in the industry. I wonder if American wedding guests will adopt this British tradition in the months to come...

Napa Valley Wedding: Joanne + Daniel

Joanne and Daniel wanted their wedding to reflect their sophisticated, yet fun style and to share their passion for great food and wine with friends and family across the globe. The couple, two Brits who met and fell in love in Houston, chose the Napa Valley for their destination wedding.

Joanne and Daniel exchanged "I-dos" amongst enormous Weeping Willow trees on the grounds of a gorgeous private estate in Calistoga. After cocktails on the lake, guests were led up to dinner and dancing by a bagpiper. Joanne's family kicked off the evening with two hilarious toasts, including one from Joanne's sister that was an all-out Fresh Prince of Bel Air style rap about the couple. (A first!) Guests spent the evening laughing, dancing, and indulging in special treats like a cigar bar and bananas foster station from Paula LeDuc Fine Catering.

Vintage San Francisco: Kathryn + Ryan

We've been dying to show you the images of Kathryn and Ryan's winter wedding for months! Martha Stewart Weddings did an wonderful job of featuring all of the spectacular details that went into Kathryn's wedding yesterday and now it's our turn! I must say - working with Kathryn was a dream. It was such a pleasure to collaborate with her on all of the details and to work with someone as into weddings as we are. She's incredibly sweet and sincere and all around just the loveliest person. It was such an honor to be a part of Kathryn and Ryan's big day. We hope you enjoy all the photos of the wedding as much as we enjoyed planning it!

So on to the wedding...

After searching for the perfect venue, Kathryn and Ryan fell in love with Swedenborgian Church in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. We had done a gorgeous wedding there a couple years back and have always loved its cozy feel. It's really magical - think roaring fire and tons of taper candles- and ideal for a winter wedding. With the church in place, Kathryn and Ryan decided to host their reception at The Presidio Social Club, a fun vintage-inspired restaurant housed in an old army barracks in the historic Presidio neighborhood of San Francisco.

Kathryn chose a color palatte of red and white with accents of charcoal gray and silver. I loved how it felt perfectly seasonal and how it worked seamlessly with the decor at the Presidio Social Club. We incorporated subtle seasonal references throughout the wedding - a simple wreath on the invitation, a pinecone rosette at each place setting, a "Poinsettia" signature cocktail and even eggnog on the dessert buffet!

After a sweet and emotional ceremony, guests recessed out of the church to find the Golden Gate Boys Choir singing "Joy to the World" and other Christmas carols. (We couldn't resist outfitting them in matching plaid scarves and navy peacoats!) Kathryn and Ryan headed to the reception in a vintage Checker taxi complete with a "Just Married" sign. At the Presidio Social Club, guests sipped vintage cocktails and enjoyed comfort food favorites, like french fries, served in custom paper cones from PS Paper. Kathleen Deery Design did a knock out job of outfitting the Club. Kathleen created a boxwood garland that lined the entryway to the club and hung miniature boxwood wreaths from the interior windows. The tables were adorned with white cyclamen in handmade vases (exclusive for Kathleen Deery Design) and just the cutest white pom-pom napkins. The whole look was timeless and elegant. After dinner, guests dug in to an incredible dessert buffet with desserts from Perfect Endings and gelato from the Noci Gelato Bike. It was a spectacular night! Mr. Boddington's Studio is one of my new favorite go-tos for wedding invitations. Owner, Rebecca Schmidt Ruebensall, infuses all of her work with her clever and playful style, while maintaining an air of sophistication. I am always amazed by Rebecca's creativity and I love working with her and her team at Mr. Boddington's. We've collaborated on three incredible wedding weekends, two of which are featured here: Chrissy and Alex's Napa Valley wedding and Rachael and Larry's Carmel Valley wedding (see below). Your fresh style at Mr. Boddington's is what I love most about it, what inspires you to come up with new designs and unique typefaces?
Thank you for the compliment Ms. Arons.... I would say the same thing about your style! There are three sources of inspiration at Mr. Boddington's Studio. The first comes directly from the collection of eclectic artists and designers who really run the studio. I use to say that we employed "Little Williamsburg" (the hipster mecca in Brooklyn) but that makes some of the team grouchy. I meant it to be a compliment... because they always have the freshest ideas and are forever in front of design. Although I am far from being ancient, it is a splendid trick to have young people in your space revealing what works and what doesn't. Secondly, the clients. A cliche, I know, but all the more true. If a bride comes in and chirps about a "farm chic wedding on the banks of Lake Placid" then we get it and design from there. You asked about creating fonts. Creating fonts is a smart way to control the design. And lastly, I am always enamored by some THING... whether it is a period in history, a piece of nature in some far jungle hidden in the Amazon, the movie I saw last Saturday night or what my one year old is reading (Babar, oh Babar!). I am typically glued to that thing for about one month... currently it is True Grit, the movie. The lead actress is wearing a tailored outfit of dark brown wools with a ruffled cotton poplin shirt underneath. Wearing that while traipsing through the rough is such a site.

Do you have a favorite type of client to work with and what is your favorite kind of project?
Nice clients! Our shop is designed to be old fashioned and brilliantly serves those who want to slow-it-down and relish in an experience that doesn't take thirty seconds. I think there use to be a certain ladies and gentlemen civility that framed business transactions. Of course we will extend that to anyone who walks in the front door but secretly love our clients who yearn for those old sophisticated ways. After all, it is your wedding so you really should adore every last drop of the planning phase. As for specific projects, I bet you would think we prefer the more unique creative briefs (pirate chic on the Ivory Coast?). Yes we do, but it is lovely to meet a bride who is going classic too.

Can you describe a typical client and the process of working on a custom designed line with you, lead time, etc...?
Meeting with clients is the best part of my job. So often a party is figuring the design and logistical details out at the invitation stage so I get to observe the dialogue. So we try to weed through the swarm of thoughts and zoom in on the paper. The paper should never be overlooked. Not only does it give a hint as to what the celebration will be like, but more importantly speaks to the couple's social personality. Once we establish a creative brief, the studio goes away and creates palettes or drafts for each piece. This allows the bride to see all the ideas in her head on paper. We bounce a few drafts back and forth until it is perfect and then go to print. Everything is letterpressed and hand tailored so takes gobs of time. The entire process can take anywhere from two to eight months.

Your wallpaper backings are so fun. I love that concept and what is so refreshing is that you don't do the typical matchy-matchy look and it works. Has wallpaper backing been a really popular thing for Mr. Boddington's? I know my clients love it.
Many clients come to Mr. Boddington's for a wallpaper backing or liner. I think it is much like designing a living room. You want to make sure each piece has a dialogue with the other, but using the same french blue toile on the couch, drapery and wallpaper is overwhelmingly drab. The ticket is to find patterns and colors that compliment one and speak to the creative brief. Recently the studio has been into designing new patterns for each bride. This morning we created one for a southern belle ball in Memphis. The wallpaper looks like something you may find on a dress in the antebellum period... think Scarlett O'Hara in a Swiss Dot dress.

Anything new at Mr. Boddington's on the horizon?
Redefining engraving is top of mind. And of course Mr. Boddington is always thinking about clever ways to get people to stop tapping away on their blueberries and pick up a pen. Maybe we can get the hipsters to write formal invites for dinner parties.

Your company is so special from the designs to the fun fresh terms you use, what inspires your creativity most? Did your past career in advertising set you perfectly on this path?
Working in advertising taught me how to pull all-nighters, sweep the floor, scrutinize the competition and balance the books... all critical business skills one needs to run a small business. Creatively speaking, I had to chop off the part of my brain that use to work in the ad game to start this business. All due respect to Donald Draper...

Words of Wisdom: Wine + Specialty Cocktails

One of the easiest ways to personalize an event is with wine and specialty cocktails. A signature drink, a fun garnish, and a custom cocktail napkin are all you need to kick off the evening on a great note. Below are some ideas and suggestions for outfitting your bar for any party. * If your budget allows, I always prefer to offer a full bar. The less you have to say "no" to your guests the better - after all, they are your guests. On the bar, I like to preselect everything from the hard alcohols to the wines right on down to the juices and sodas being served. I typically like to select a high quality vodka, gin, whiskey and scotch for a basic bar. There are lots of things to add on like tequila, rum, etc. but those aren't necessary. I love to serve what the client likes too if there are specific drinks or beers or wines they love, it is a way to make the event feel more personal and less generic.

* During cocktail hour, I like to offer a food-friendly white wine, like Sauvignon Blanc, and a lighter red wine at the bar. Save wines with bigger, bolder profiles for pairing with dinner courses.

* Mix up specialty cocktails to coordinate with the look and feel of the event. Then, create a custom bar menu to frame and place on each bar.

* On a warm day, it is always nice to greet guests with a non-alcoholic beverage before the wedding ceremony. One of my favorite go-to drinks is lavender lemonade with a lavender sprig garnish or Paula LeDuc's famous minted ice tea. So refreshing!

* Have your caterer place only one type of beverage per tray when tray passing during cocktails. Trust me - this makes for a much cleaner visual presentation. And anyone who knows me, knows this is my biggest pet peeve! (Psst - same goes for hors d'oeuvres!)

* I'm obsessed with this next tip - Just Married wine from the incredible Swanson Vineyards is the perfect wine for your wedding dinner or bar. The wine is super delicious, reasonably priced at $25 per bottle and is the ultimate conversation piece. Sure to get your nearest and dearest talking! Rumor has it - a white version is on its way soon!

*Bring in your own celebrity mixologist for your party. A mixologist can really customize the perfect libations for your event. In the SF Bay Area, Rye on the Road makes an amazing addition to any event's cocktail hour.

* Don't forget the little extras! Nice cocktail napkins that are custom printed or even linen hemstitch make a huge difference. Or try a fun straw or stir stick which are festive and add a lot of personality to the drink.

Hall Wine Cave Rehearsal Dinner: Holly + Michael

Hall Wine Cave is one of my favorite spots for an intimate rehearsal dinner. The cave is pristine yet welcoming and the perfect showcase for Hall's extensive art collection and phenomenal wines. Deep in the cave lies the perfect spot for a dinner with close family and friends - a room that is filled with a sparkling chandelier that resembles an upside down tree. After cocktails on the veranda overlooking the vineyards, guests make their way through the tunnels lined with oak barrels to dine under the glimmer of the tree chandelier. It makes for a truly magical evening.

Cavallo Point, Sausalito Wedding: Jason + Laura

Remember Jason and Laura? We're kicking off 2011 with their adorable Sausalito wedding at Cavallo Point. Cavallo Point is a stunning, eco-friendly luxury hotel located on a historic military base- just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. It has breathtaking views of the city and made the perfect backdrop for Jason and Laura's fall nuptials. The couple exchanged "I-dos" in front of an altar of bright orange dahlias created by the super talented Torryne Choate of Birch San Francisco. After the ceremony, guests gathered on the Verbena Terrace and sipped on specialty drinks like Basil Cucumber Soda served in glass mason jars (complete with striped paper straws!) and waited for the bride and groom to make their entrance. When Jason and Laura pulled up in their antique Rolls Royce, guests waved custom fabric red, orange, and blue flags to kick off the reception. It was such a magical moment and really set the night off on a fun note!

After dinner, guests were lead by a parade of brass musicians to the Mission Chapel for dancing and dessert. (Even the parade musicians were decked for the occasion - we outfitted them in tweed vests and custom bowties to match the guests' flags.) The Chapel was aglow with a soft orange light and filled with comfy orange banquettes from Blueprint Studios. Upon entering, we screened Jason and Laura's love story and passed parmesan popcorn in vintage popcorn boxes. Then, guests cut loose and danced the night away to the amazing sounds of Chris Clouse and Dave Kim.

2010 was filled with milestones at Laurie Arons Special Events. Serves: 1

1 sugar cube
1/4 teaspoon pure cranberry concentrate
2 dashes of bitters

2. Pour cranberry concentrate and shake bitters over sugar cube. Top with champagne.

Your wood crates are such a great touch and really elevate the gift experience. Can you tell me more about them?

We really wanted our packaging to be as thoughtful as the gift inside. Not only did we want it to be beautiful, but we also wanted it to be functional beyond a cardboard box and wrapping paper. I love to hear stories of Olive & Cocoa gift-recipients using those crates to store anything and everything, from knickknacks to DVDs. We also do our share to be environmentally friendly - our wood crates are often made of reclaimed wood and contain a custom paper shred made from recycled paper, which protects the precious contents inside.

Napa Valley Engagement Shoot: Kathryn + Ryan

Kathryn and Ryan are really just the sweetest couple. When they are together, they both exude happiness and love and are really so much fun to be around. For their engagement shoot, we head up to a private estate in St. Helena with Elizabeth Messina for a picnic lunch and photos amongst the vines. Kathryn wore two stunning dresses - one of which happened to go perfectly with the yellow cabanas on property. (How cute is that?) In between shots, the couple nibbled on a simple picnic lunch that we sourced straight from the San Francisco Farmer's Market that morning - check out the menu below. I think Elizabeth Messina did such an amazing job of capturing all the sweet little moments between Kathryn and Ryan. Weekly Inspiration: Considering Your Guests

Even though it's your big day, it's still important to make sure your guests are comfortable. For a wedding in Hana, we placed a basket full of sandals for guests to switch into during the recessional down a muddy hillside. Guests (especially those clad in stiletto heels!) really appreciated the gesture. At the end of the trek, they were greeted with warm towels to wipe their feet before putting on their dancing shoes. Another one of my favorite ideas is providing shawls for chilly evening celebrations. You can get great quality pashminas in a multitude of colors to coordinate with your wedding colors or (my favorite) a simple, creamy ivory, which is beautiful with almost any outfit.

Calistoga Rehearsal Dinner: Dabney + Rob

Dabney and Rob hosted a simply elegant rehearsal dinner at Calistoga Ranch the evening before they said "I do" in the Napa Valley. Calistoga Ranch is one of my favorite venues - it's luxurious and lush and each part of the property blends seamlessly with the breathtaking surroundings. (I also love to escape for a weekend for a little R&R at their spa!) For Dabney and Rob's rehearsal dinner, we played off the resort's amazing scenery with a fun moss and stone escort table and lots of wood details. The whole look was stunning!

Meet Jackson. He's a fifteen year old entrepreneur from San Anselmo and together with his old-fashioned ice cream trike, he's taking the dessert world by storm. Jackson creates some of the most delicious ice cream treats using ingredients from local artisans like Miette Patisserie and Three Twins Ice Cream. Think ginger lemon ice cream sandwiches... yum! Perfect in Pink: Kate + Brandon

Kate and Brandon recently relocated to Seattle and wanted to get married somewhere fun that would create a relaxed atmosphere for their friends and family. After considering Hawaii, they finally decided upon the Napa Valley for their nuptials. Napa is a fantastic destination wedding location - it's easily accessible, has amazing food & wine, and is the perfect place to relax and kick back. Kate and Brandon selected the stunning Beaulieu Garden property for their ceremony and reception. Kate really wanted pale pink peonies for the wedding flowers and fortunately, her wedding date fell at the height of their season. We incorporated the flowers everywhere from their invitations to her bouquet to the cake. I loved how the peonies were just the perfect shade of pink - so subtle and elegant and not overly feminine. Just perfect!

My favorite detail? I still can't stop looking at the dessert buffet by Paula LeDuc Fine Catering. I love the cake stands and how everything on it tasted as amazing as it looked! The stunning centerpiece cake is (of course) Perfect Endings. Oh wait, the strawberry shortcake station made fresh before your eyes? It's a close second. Be still my heart!

Words of Wisdom: Selecting a Destination Wedding Location

With wedding guests scattered all over the globe, it’s no wonder destination weddings have grown in popularity over the last few years. When nearly everyone on the couple’s list is making travel arrangements for the wedding, often including the bride and groom themselves, suddenly the opportunities expand to include any gorgeous location they can see themselves getting married.

I personally love destination weddings. There is nothing quite like sharing an incredibly special moment with your closest friends and family in a beautiful location. The intimacy and camaraderie among the guests is truly magical, not to mention the all out fun that comes with being on vacation. I've planned countless destination weddings and events, and each one adds new excitement and challenges to my job (and anyone who knows me knows I love a challenge).

While a destination wedding is seemingly the laid back way to go, there is a whole set of considerations and etiquette guidelines that come with planning a wedding from afar. Here’s some advice on selecting a location for those who are considering taking the leap.

Top Ten Things to Consider When Selecting Your Destination Wedding Location

1. Though you may expect a smaller group to attend, always start with a complete guest list. This is a must, so you can determine with certainty that the venues for the ceremony and reception are large enough for all of your friends and family.

2. Check into the range of guest accommodations. It's a lot to ask your guests to travel and take time off work, then on top of it pay for a costly hotel room. In a destination setting, it’s best to keep your group together. Finding a resort with a reasonable range of rates that can accommodate everyone is ideal. It not, search for nearby low to mid-price hotel options in addition to a luxury hotel. Be sure to review the room block policies carefully - you don’t want to get stuck with guarantees or minimums you aren't able to fill.

3. Think about elderly guests and how the travel and/or venue will affect them. Factors like very warm climates and hard to reach locations can be prohibitive for some elderly guests.

4. Make sure you love (and I mean love!) the ceremony and reception venues. If you love those, the rehearsal dinner and/or brunch venue will fall into place. I promise.

5. Be sure you have total confidence in the venue representative and caterer. The wedding caterer is the most important vendor - they provide all of the service for your wedding and will interact with your guests the more than any other vendor.

6. Explore what your guests will be able to do in the area. Is there enough around to keep them entertained during the down times? If not, you may want to consider planning fun day trips (like a hike) or other activities for your guests.

7. Consider airfare costs and travel times for most of your guests. The further from home and more costly the destination, the smaller group you may have.

8. Do a preliminary review of local vendors (music, photographers, flowers, lighting, rentals, transportation, cake, hair and make up, video). See if you like their work or if you will need to "import" a vendor from your area.

9. Research marriage requirements. If you're planning on getting married outside the country, be advised that marriage requirements vary and can include waiting periods. You will want to factor that into your planning timeline.

10. Consider hiring a planner, and this isn’t just because I happen to be one. Destination weddings require insight and impeccable planning. Most resorts offer planning services, but be advised those planners can be limited in scope. If you want someone to take you through every detail, you should consider an independent planner with an expertise in planning destination weddings.

Some of my favorite destination wedding locations are right here in the United States, making things logistically simpler for the bride, groom and their attendees.

The Breakers, Palm Beach Florida – this spectacular Italian-Renaissance hotel overlooking the ocean is just magnificent. Brides who want a regal and formal affair even in a seaside location will no doubt be blown away by the Breakers old world glamour.

The Carneros Inn, Napa California - just a short drive from the Bay Area, wine country is also a coveted wedding destination for brides all over the world. Carneros Inn juxtaposes pastoral barns and silos with sleek modern interiors for a California cool atmosphere.

I love how refreshing and colorful these cocktails look in various glass vessels. Such a fun (and low maintenance!) way to serve up anything from lemonade to margaritas. We paired them with mason jar glasses for a rehearsal dinner at Holman Ranch in the Carmel Valley. Have a great weekend!

Palm Beach in Black + White: Nikki + Chad

Nikki and Chad's Palm Beach wedding was filled with so many unique and fun surprises for their guests. Everything from the specially designed menu by the incredible chef Tyler Florence, to a surprise performance by Boyz II Men, to the reveal of the late night dance lounge with DJ Samantha Ronson wowed guests from beginning to end. Tyler worked with the amazing staff at The Ritz-Carlton to put together a show stopping meal - scallop saltimbocca with carmelized apple and crispy fried sage, asparagus and speck salad topped with the most delectable crispy poached egg, and a braised short rib and roasted filet with brussel sprouts, pancetta, and porcinis. It was phenomenal! After dinner, Boyz II Men made a cameo appearance to kick off dancing with Boogie Nights. And just when guests thought they had seen it all, we revealed a hidden dance lounge with DJ Samantha Ronson. Guests partied until well past 3 in the morning, but still had enough energy to make it down on Sunday to the "recovery brunch". Perhaps it was the hangover kits we had delivered to their rooms complete with aspirin, alka seltzer, and crackers?

My Favorite Detail? Did you notice the incredible cake from Perfect Endings below? Need I say more? It was 7 layers of delicious bliss.

Italian Inspired Rehearsal Dinner: Nikki + Chad

Nikki and Chad welcomed guests to their Italian inspired rehearsal dinner with cocktails on the croquet lawn at The Breakers Palm Beach. Event designer, Renny & Reed, flew in beautiful trees from New York which we centered the stations around. Reed even incorporated mini versions of the trees for the escort table. We hung the amazing escort cards from Mr. Boddington's Studio from the little branches.

After cocktails, guests feasted on an exquisite Italian dinner in the majestic Circle Ballroom. To start, a trio of pastas including a light-as-air sweet potato gnocchi, followed by The Breaker's take on a caesar salad - a combination of roasted garlic dressing, topped with a balsamic reduction and jumbo stuffed fried olives. Everyone raved about the veal with a skillet of polenta and spinach and could not believe their eyes when the meal finished with an enormous gelato sundae! The amazing meal was enhanced by the perfect wine pairings that The Breaker's master sommelier, Virginia Philip, picked for the meal.

Nikki surprised Chad and the rest of her guests by booking The Three Waiters for dinner entertainment. If you're not familiar, The Three Waiters are amazing singers disguised as actual waiters. Throughout dinner, they put on a bit of a show (it's quite funny and guests totally buy into the act.) At the end of the meal, the waiters are revealed as the amazing singers that they are and put on an astounding performance. Check out the photo below of guest Jerry Rice - he loved it!

My Favorite Detail? The escort cards from Mr. Boddington's Studio. The wax seal with the couple's monogram made them so special. Plus, I loved how guests wore them on their wrists throughout cocktails!

Words of Wisdom: Thoughts on Videography

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a sucker for a good wedding video. I love seeing the highlights of the big day captured beautifully on film and woven seamlessly together to make a story that is so touching and so unique to each couple. Film is a wonderful addition to your wedding memories and I highly recommend incorporating it if your budget allows.

That said, it can be quite overwhelming to have a flurry of cameras around you on your wedding day. So I've compiled some suggestions to avoid making your wedding into a circus of photographers and film crew!

* I believe the photographer should have priority over the videographer on the wedding day. Nothing ruins the perfect shot like a cameraman dodging in front of the lens. To make sure the photographer has the priority on the wedding day, be sure that it is written into the contract that the film crew should not be in front of the photographer's camera at anytime unless worked out ahead of time. I especially feel this is very important during the ceremony!

* Make sure the videographer moves around as little as possible during the ceremony. I usually allow one stationary camera off to the side of the altar (with no cameraman). This ensures you'll get the angle, but will keep all eyes on the soon-to-be-married couple and not the cameraman.

* Videographers should never interview guests or ask them to "Say a few words about the couple" into the camera. Nothing is more awkward for guests than to be interviewed on the spot (on film no less)! They should always accommodate requests for guests who ask to say a few words, but never impose.

* If you are like me and don't want to ruin the beautiful atmosphere that was created for the event, you need to make sure they do not use any light except during the cake cutting, first dance, or toasts (if it is dark). Having the camera light on during those key moments is actually a plus because it adds a follow spot on the bride and groom. Going without lighting may jeopardize quality a tad, but it will help your event feel more personal and intimate by not drawing attention to the cameras that are around.

* While I love "getting ready" shots, I think it is best to keep the photos and filming on the shorter side as that is a really critical time for keeping the day on schedule and too many cameras can create a bit of chaos.

* Videographers and photographers should keep their camera bags in a hidden, yet accessible spot at all times. Camera bags are not part of the event decor!

* A lot of my brides ask me which type of film to go with - HD vs. Super 8 vs. 16MM vs. Digital Video. There really are so many great choices! I really love the combo of Super 8 film and digital video. Super 8 reminds me of my dad's movies of us as kids. He would take his little camera with him on all vacations and film everything. And while I love the nostalgic look of Super 8, the one drawback is that there is no sound. In order to capture the sound during toasts, first dance, ceremony you need to also have a digital video camera. The end result is great (the video above of Nikki and Chad incorporates both Super 8 and digital). Of course, 16mm is spectacular and doesn't have the sound drawback of Super 8, but it can be much more expensive. For weddings, I really don't recommend HD video as realistic and crisp as the picture can be. It can be really unflattering and that is not how you would want to remember your wedding day!

Palm Beach Welcome Party: Nikki + Chad

Nikki and Chad's amazing wedding weekend kicked off with a welcome party at The Ritz-Carlton Palm Beach. Guests were invited for "mojitos on the beach," but with the Florida weather being unseasonably chilly, we had to move the party indoors to one of the resort's restaurants. Nevertheless, the welcome party was a blast. Reed, from Renny & Reed, decked the place out in dashing turquoise linens and enough Oncidium orchids to make everyone forget about their weather woes.

Guests sipped on strawberry jalapeno mojitos, one of the The Ritz-Carlton's signature cocktails, and feasted on mini cuban sandwiches, sliders, and hand cut french fries. In addition to the delicious passed snacks, there were also a handful of stations that were so yummy, guests left not wanting a thing! (I must say that the culinary team at The Ritz-Carlton Palm Beach is so amazingly creative with their station displays. I was really impressed!) For dessert, we passed fruit sorbet shaped like actual fruit on ice trays and set up bananas foster stations complete with endless topping options.

Weekly Inspiration: Flower Pot Cakes

Spring has sprung! How cute are these flower pot cakes from Perfect Endings? I think they'd make a lovely garden lunch dessert, especially placed on top of these leaf plates. They're playful, yet pretty and not to mention delicious. The cake is super moist and topped with the most amazing cookie crumbs you have ever tasted. So good!

The Breakers Palm Beach is the definition of luxury. It is spectacularly beautiful, the service is unparalleled, and its oceanfront location cannot be beat. It is the perfect destination wedding location. Palm Beach is a snap to get to and The Breakers has so many amazing areas both indoors and out to host different events. I am especially enamored with their ballrooms - the ceilings! the ocean views! They are truly stunning. Last month, The Breakers added me to their preferred list of wedding planners as the preferred west coast planner. It's the ultimate compliment!

What’s your favorite wedding food trend of the moment? "Home-Style meets Chic". A couple of examples are: Pomegranate Short Ribs served over creamy goat cheese polenta and topped with Indian River citrus fennel slaw. Served in a martini glass. Or a Low Country Shrimp and Grits Station served from mini skillets.

What are the top 5 things a couple should look for when scouting venues for their ceremony/reception?

1) Consider having a destination wedding without leaving the USA. The Breakers offers a full destination wedding experience without the hassle of passports, customs, multiple plane changes and last but not least making the experience easier for you guests.

2) Interview the Catering Manager to ensure that they have a high degree of expertise in the following areas: menu planning, ceremony orchestration and connections to the best vendors in the wedding industry.

3) Plan your tasting approximately 3 months prior to your wedding to ensure the menu is creative and speaks to you individual taste and style.

4) Look for a venue that has "All Inclusive" packages like The Breakers. For example: some caterer's prices might appear to be lower than a resort however, you may experience "hidden fees" that actually make it more expensive. Examples would be rentals such as china, tables, chairs, tenting, A/C, electrical charges, etc.

5) Finalize all major details thirty days prior so that you have time to enjoy some personal pampering before the big day.

Can you tell me about an event you are most proud of? And why?

My daughter's wedding! It was held at The Breakers this past November. I only have one child and it was both of our dreams to have it at The Breakers. The wedding was everything that we hoped for and more. It was a full destination wedding with guests traveling from all over the country including California and New York. We started the celebrations with the rehearsal dinner down by the beach followed by the wedding the next day in our gorgeous Circle Ballroom. We concluded the weekend with a farewell brunch on the top of the Ocean Terrace with breath taking views of the blue Atlantic Ocean. For a sneak peak of the wedding click here.

The Breakers has so many spectacular ballrooms, which is your favorite? My personal favorite is the Circle Ballroom but they are all so gorgeous in their own special way. Check out The Breakers wedding website and blog to learn more.

Do you have any suggestions for couples who want personalize their hotel / resort reception?

* Couples can rent our ocean side Grand Cabana's and invite all their guests to spend the day with them before their rehearsal dinner or after their Sunday brunch (I prefer the latter as it is an opportunity to relax, unwind and relive all the weekend activities with your closest family and friends).

* Another idea is to hire an artist to paint the wedding as it takes place. A cherished memory that you have forever and also really fun for the guests to watch the artist paint.

* Personalizing a thank you card or a "To-Go"gift that's placed in your guest's cars by Valet.

* An obvious and popular way is with the gift bag but add in a CD with the couples favorite tunes.

* Make the grooms cake about something he is passionate about , ie: A replica of his boat, his Alma Mater, such as a giant Gator Cake for the Florida Gators, or giant NY Jets Helmet.

Do you prefer a seated dinner or stations for a wedding dinner? What should a couple consider when deciding between the two? Seated. In deciding between a seated dinner or stations, couples should consider if some of the traditional formalities are important to them such as being introduced, first dance, toasts, and cutting of the cake. It is much easier to have guests attention at a seated dinner....after all it is about the bride and groom, so why not get all the attention they can get.

The Breakers hosts fabulous Indian Weddings complete with a Chef who specializes in Indian cuisine. Can you tell me about your favorite Indian wedding at The Breakers? I have to defer to Jeff Fowler who is our Indian wedding expert. Jeff recently coordinated a destination Indian wedding where they did a station style Sangeet (the equivalent to a rehearsal dinner) with Bollywood performances through out the evening. The Wedding day included traditional Indian rituals such as the Barat for the Groom and the Dholi for the Bride. Our Indian chef prepared sumptuous Indian cuisine with a modern twist. The Thali was created from edible vegetables bowls. The Breakers Design Studio did all the decor for the weekend including arranging for specialty Indian decor and incorporating customized Deities (Indian Gods and Goddesses).

There are lots of destination wedding locales, but very few have a venue like The Breakers for a wedding or rehearsal dinner. Why is the Breakers in Palm Beach is the perfect choice for a destination wedding? Sometimes brides are deciding between a castle in Europe or a Caribbean locale for their destination wedding. The Breakers offers the best of both worlds with spectacular ballrooms, ocean front location with a tropical climate, excellent food and service. Everything they need is right here and it is so much easier for their guests to get to. The resort is situated on 140 acres of Ocean-front in Palm Beach , Florida. We have 540 guest rooms, two 18 hole golf courses, full service spa, gorgeous beach bungalows, eight restaurants and so many other amenities!

Romantic Napa Valley: Neely + Adam

As people go, there is no one more radiant than Neely. She is bubbly, fun, and simply lovely to be around. Neely is a romantic to the core and really wanted her wedding to be an intimate celebration with close family and friends. We put together a stunning palette of dusty pinks and creams, tons of candlelight, and lots of lush garden roses to create the romantic look she was striving for. Neely and Adam picked one of my favorite private estates in the Napa Valley for their ceremony and reception - a magnificent home with gorgeous gardens and extraordinary outdoor space. And despite the threat of rain on her wedding day, Neely was as bright as the California sunshine.

The ceremony was beautiful. It's simple palette of whites and greens was elevated to ethereal with a lush white rose petal aisle. After the ceremony, guests cocktailed by the pond and indulged in a seafood bar - a favorite of the bride and groom. For dinner, we set 2 long tables with exquisite arrangements of pastel garden roses, dahlias, and hydrangea under a canopy of trees. Ladies were even greeted with a perfectly placed posy at their seat. Guests dined by candlelight and later danced the evening away to the Durell Coleman Band.

My favorite detail? The long tables with the candles hanging from the trees were perfect for the romantic wedding Neely desired. The combination of the candlelight and laughter from the guests created such a magical evening.
